HISTORY OF PIPE EXCHANGE

The history of Pipe Exchange dates back to 1983 when it was founded by Bob Lingle, a seasoned industry professional who from the 1950s through the 1970s had built, together with S.J. Gaido, the Gaido Lingle Company, one of the largest line pipe coating companies in the United States. Gaido Lingle Company  was sold to General Steel in 1981 to eventually become what today is known as ShawCor.

While Gaido Lingle was busy coating large diameter transmission lines during the 1970s oil boom, they also realized that the industry struggled to find capacity to service day to day coating requirements from distributors.  To balance the capacity shortage with an industry need, they developed the unusual practice of purchasing bare ERW pipe from 3” – 8”, back then from Tex-Tube, and coating it with FBE during project changeovers at their Pearland facility.  When a distributor was in need for coated material, they would simply exchange their bare pipe for coated pipe and while the distributor would be billed exclusively for the coating service.  This innovative and atypical approach, became known as “Pipe Exchange” only to eventually inspire the name of what was to become the industry leader for coated ready-to-ship line pipe in North America.

In the summer of 1983, after missing the day to day action, Bob Lingle decided to return to the industry. Leveraging the experience and relationships he had built since the 1950s, he founded Pipe Exchange International. Through the hard work, focus and determination that has permeated the company’s culture for over 3 decades, Pipe Exchange continued to grow the vision of its founders and evolved into one of the major line pipe distributors in the United States.

Today Pipe Exchange is part of the Corpac Group portfolio of steel products and services companies, serving end users and distributors across multiple industries throughout the world.
